Registering to Vote

General Information

Who can register

To register in Oklahoma you must:

• be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of Oklahoma
• be 18 years old on or before the date of the next election
• have not been convicted of a felony, for which a period of time equal to the original sentence has not expired, or for which you have not been pardoned
• not now be under judgment as an incapacitated person, or a partially incapacitated person prohibited from registering to vote

How to register

1. Use our Register to Vote form below to fill out the National Voter Registration Form.
2. Sign and date your form. This is very important!
3. Mail or hand-deliver your completed form to the address we provide.
4. Make sure you register before the voter registration deadline.

Overseas and Military Voting

You are a Military or Overseas voter if you are in uniformed services, living overseas OR a spouse or dependent of a uniformed services voter. To get registered and vote, you can utilize Overseas Vote Foundation.

Voting with Disabilities

If you have a disability you may ask for assistance from poll workers at your polling place. If you cannot enter the polling place because of physical disabilities, need help marking your ballot because of physical disabilities, have visual disabilities, or cannot read, you may be assisted by a person of your own choosing. In all these cases, the person who provides assistance to you must swear or affirm that your ballots will be marked in accordance with your wishes. If you are unable to vote inside the polling place, two precint officials will help you to vote outside the polling place.

You may also choose to vote independently by telephone. Telephone voting is available upon request at your polling place on Election Day. Please contact your county election boards to verify this device is located at your polling place. It should also be available at the county election board office during early voting. An election official dials into the telephone voting system and selects the correct ballot from a menu of options. You will then listen to the ballot over the telephone and make selections using the telephone keypad. You may review and, if necessary, change any selection and may hear all choices read back before finally casting the ballot.

Early Voting

In person absentee voting will be available at your County Election Board on the Thursday (8am to 6pm), and Friday (8am to 6pm) before each election. If it is a Federal or State election, in person absentee voting will also be available on the Saturday (9am to 2pm) before the election.

Any registered Oklahoma voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail.

How to get Absentee ballot

1. Use our Absentee Ballot form below to prepare your application.
2. Sign and date the form. This is very important!
3. Return your completed application to your Local Election Office as soon as possible. We’ll provide the mailing address for you.
4. All Local Election Offices will accept mailed or hand-delivered forms. If it’s close to the deadline, call and see if your Local Election Office will let you fax or email the application.
5. Make sure your application is received by the deadline. Your application must actually arrive by this time — simply being postmarked by the deadline is insufficient.
6. Please contact your Local Election Office if you have any further questions about the exact process.

What to do next

1. Once you receive the ballot, carefully read and follow the instructions.
2. Sign and date where indicated.
3. Unless you are physically incapacitated or caring for a person who is incapacitated, you must have your absentee ballot affidavit notarized. (Note: Oklahoma limits the number of absentee ballot affidavits a single notary can sign to no more than 20 without special authorization.)
4. Mail your voted ballot back to the address indicated on the return envelope.
5. Your voted ballot must arrive by the deadline or it will not be counted.

Poll Worker Information

In order to be a poll worker in Oklahoma, you must:

Be registered to vote in Oklahoma
Be at least 18 years of age
Be a resident of the county for the 25 days prior to the election
Complete required training every two years

State Election Board Secretary and Members

The Oklahoma State Election Board was established under the Constitution of the State of Oklahoma in 1907. The term “State Election Board” may refer to either the agency or the three-member board.

The Board is composed of three members and two alternate members.  An alternate member may serve at any meeting of the Board if a member is unable to attend.

The members and alternate members are appointed to four-year terms by the Governor from lists provided by the political parties with the largest and second largest number of registered voters. The appointments require the advice and consent of the State Senate.

Although under Oklahoma law the Board is not a “governing” board for the agency, it has many important functions. Its responsibilities include certifying state and federal election results, appointing county election board members, and deciding contests of candidacy.

Administration and governance of the agency is the responsibility of the Secretary of the State Election Board, who is the chief state election official. The Secretary serves a two-year term.
